Army Sports Photo Exhibition 2015 at BMICH…
A Sports Photo Exhibition organized by the Sri Lanka Army was declared open today (10th Tuesday, February 2015) at the BMICH by the Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Mr. BMUD Basnayake.
The Secretary was received by the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake upon his arrival at the venue. During the opening ceremony a moment of silence was observed to pay tribute to the War Heroes who had paid the ultimate sacrifice towards ushering in an era of peace to the country.
The sports body of the Sri Lanka Army is as old as the army itself. From humble beginnings with just 10 sportsmen chosen to be trained to compete at national level, the army can now boast of having produced a number of sportsmen and women who have brought fame and glory to Sri Lanka at national, regional and International sporting events. Of the 55 main sports that are played in the country the army has its men trained for participation in 35 sporting disciplines. Army sportsmen such as Duncan White, Rosa, Suanthika Jayasinghe, Sugath Thilakaratne and Ajantha Mendis have helped to put the name of the country in the international sporting arena.
The exhibition has a large and rare number of photos of its sportsmen and women taken at local and international events. It can be described as an illustrative description of army sports history with many rare and well preserved pictures on display.
A book on the history of army sports was presented to the Secretary by the commander of the army during the ceremony.
The three day exhibition will go on till Thursday (12th February) and will be open to public from morning to evening free of charge.
Secretary to the Ministry of Sport Mr. MIM Rafeek, former commanders of the army, senior army officers and many army sports personalities were also present at the opening ceremony.
