Athletics-Chandrika Wins Two Golds!
Chandrika Subhashini Rasnayake and Abdul Rasheed Rajaskhan shared three gold medals among them while M H Saleem Deen bagged a silver in his very first international appearance to lift Sri Lanka’s medal tally to four gold medals, two silver and a bronze medal during the Thailand Open Athletic Championship which is in progress at the Thammasat University Stadium in Bangkok yesterday.
Chandrika proved that she is no match for others in the women’s 200 metres, but had to face tough challenge from Thai athlete Ajchima Engchuan during the first 300 metres in her pet event, the women’s 400 metres final.
But the Lankan lass managed to extend the gap to about 10 metres at the end, clocking 53.67 to win her second gold medal yesterday. She won the first gold medal of the day for Sri Lanka, clocking 24.03 seconds in the women’s 200 metres ahead of Thailand’s Kwanruthoi Pokdee (24.62 seconds) and Supawan Thipat (25.07 seconds), before adding more sweetness to her happiness by winning the second gold medal in the evening.
The competition did not turn up as I expected. I honestly expected to have a better finish. I have high hopes on the upcoming Asian Games and hoping to give my best for the country at Incheon,” added the double gold medalist Chandrika. Once again Chandrika has proved that she is capable of hunting more and more glory in the international arena by winning two gold medals and with a best time of 52.36 seconds in her pet event, she hopes to give her best shot under unfamiliar weather conditions.
Rajaskhan, currently the only national level 200-metres specialist in Sri Lanka, secured the gold with a 21.35 second run in which he showed that he is gaining pace this season. This is only his third appearance in an international meet and also his third international medal. Earlier, Rajaskhan has run in the Macau Open and Thailand Open in 2013, securing the silver medal in both occasions.
