He graduated from Sunny Hills High School in Fullerton, California, in 1966, after which he relocated to Greenwich Village in New York and joined the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.
He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.
He married actress/model Phyllis Major in December 1975. She committed suicide soon after in March 1976. He then married Australian model Lynne Sweeney in January 1981, but they divorced in 1983, after which he dated actress Daryl Hannah for a time. He fathered two sons, one by each wife.
He performed with Bruce Springsteen, Roy Orbison, and k.d. lang for Roy Orbison and Friends: A Black and White Night, the 1988 Cinemax TV special.
