In the press conference after arriving on Tuesday afternoon, the first question Lasith Malinga was asked, was about Sri Lanka’s death bowling in the WT20 final against India. According to Sri Lankan T20 captain, he was lucky to play the final with India. IPL experience has given him a clear idea about the strengths of Indian batsmen.

“As a captain, I was lucky that India qualified for the final. After playing 6 seasons of the IPL, I have a good idea about them, specially their batting order. I got an opportunity to use that experience in a world cup final, because it was against India.”

“I know Indian batsmen like to score heavily in last 4-5 overs. Also, I know which batsman like to score in which area. I talked with my bowlers about that, to make sure they bowl at correct line and lengths to each batsman. In the night before the final, I discussed with our bowlers about what to do in certain situations. I think, the experience I got from the IPL helped me a lot to win a world cup against India. I think I did it successfully to restrict a strong batting line up like them to 130 in 20 overs, after losing just 2 wickets.”

Malinga further said that regular captain Dinesh Chandimal had already planned the tournament the tournament when he got the captaincy for last 3 games and, he only had to get the best out of everyone.

“In the world cup, I only had to captain last 3 games. I didn’t have to do many changes. At that time, Chandimal had captained 3 games and planned the tournament. I had to get the best out of everyone. I think I did it successfully. I think I was able to identify the talents of my players, what I can get from them. That’s why today, after 18 years we were able to win a world cup. It was a team effort. The team won it. The contribution made by coaches and staff also was crucial.”

“We went to the tournament with lot of hopes. Because we had many experienced captains and T20 players. With all that, we went with big hopes. We didn’t expect wins overnight. We worked hard for a long period of time. We went to the tournament after studying the kind of teams and players we have to face. I think, as a result of that, after playing 6 games, we were able to win the trophy.”
