More Than 7,500 Competitors for Colombo Marathon…
he prize money for the winners of the mens and womens races of the Colombo Marathon which will be held on October 5 has been has been increased with the intention of attracting more competitors.This was revealed at a media briefing held at Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management, recently.
In fact, this is a big increase in prize money when compared with the prize money offered in previous marathons. Last year it was 1500 US Dollars.
The event has contributed to promote Sri Lanka as a sports tourism destination over the years while laying a platform for many local runners to compete with foreigners. The inaugural race was held in Galle in 1998 and introduced as the LSR International Marathon. After hosting the event successfully in Negombo, Kandy and Dambulla in the following years it was named the Colombo Marathon in 2004. There were more than 5000 runners in the race last year.
More than 7500 participants are expected in this year’s event.
The main organizer of the race, Lanka Sportreizen (LSR), a leading travel agency will be partnered by the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau and Sri Lankan Airlines in hosting the event.
The Marathon will start in close proximity to the Ministry of Sports and will proceed through Borella, Dematagoda, Peliyagoda, Wattala, Hamilton Canal passing Pamunugama , Thalahena, Pitipana, Duwa and will reach the Negombo Beach Park covering a total distance of 42.196 kilometres.
Apart from the Men’s and Women’s full marathon, there will be full and half marathons for men and women over 50 years. The half marathon for 17 years and above will run for 21.097 kilometres while two fun runs for 15 years and above will conducted in 10kms and 5kms.
Applications can be obtained from Lanka Sportreizen office at 29B, S.De.S.Jayasinghe Mawatha, Kalubowila, Dehiwala and and should be posted to the same address before September 20. Lanka Sportreizen Chairman Thilak Weerasinghe mentioned that Colombo Marathon is becoming a main sporting event in the South Asian region. Apart from that he said that the World Governing body for marathon , AIMS have reserved a date for Colombo Marathon in their events calendar.
LSR gets all the support from Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, Sri Lankan Airlines, Ministry of Sports, Athletic Association of Sri Lanka, Western Province Tourist Board, Western Province Council, the Tri-Forces and Sri Lanka Police, National Youth Services Council and Education Ministry of the Western Province.
