Sri Lanka in historic 3-2 win over Lebanon!

Sri Lanka emerged champions when they beat Lebanon by 3 – 2 in the Davis Cup Group two Asia Oceania Zone Relegation play off concluded at Sri Lanka Tennis Association Courts yesterday.

Lebanon’s Hady Habib outplayed Sri Lanka’s emerging tennis player Shermal Dissanayake after a stiff encounter in the first singles in the morning.

The Lebanese suffered a setback when he lost the third and fourth sets, but managed to win the cruicial fifth and final set (7/5, 6/4, 4/6, 4/6, 6/3).

Though Shermal tried to make a come back, he was unable to cope with the tough attack by the Lebanon player who came out with a powefull attack to steal the victory from the Sri Lankan lad.

Meanwhile the experienced Harshana Godamanne defeated Lebanon’s Giovanni Samaha in straight sets without much difficulty (6/3, 6/2, 6/3) to ensure a 3-2 win for the Sri Lankans.

In the men’s doubles the Sri Lankan duo of Harshana Godamanna and Dineshkanthan Thangarajah tasted defeat at the hands of the Lebanese duo of Hady Habib and Giovanni Samaha on Saturday. (7/6, 2/6, 6/3, 3/6, 6/3)

Sri Lanka will stay in the Group two next year while Lebanon will be relegated to Asia-Oceania Zone group three. Currently Sri Lanka is ranked 63 in the Davis Cup while Lebanon is ranked eight places below Sri Lanka at 71. It was a historic win for Sri Lanka who last won a Davis Cup tie on home soil in 1995.
