Sri Lanka to Attract More Tourists!
Sri Lanka’s embassy in Russia launched a detailed tourist guide book on Sri Lanka in English language in view of promoting Sri Lanka in overseas and to attract more tourists in to the island an official said.
The 296-page tourist guide book includes the country profile, places to visit in Sri Lanka, hotel accommodation information, available leisure activities and emergency numbers.
The book is a translation of the Russian language tourist guide book which launched year 2012.
“Sri Lanka had 60730 Russian tourists last year which used to be 4256 in 2005,” H.E Udayanga Weerathunga, Sri Lankan Ambassador in Russia said.
“That’s why we need to promote our country to get more tourists.”
He was speaking at the launching ceremony of the new book in Colombo.
Russia stands 4th for the numbers of tourist arrivals in to Sri Lanka while traditional markets like UK, Germany and France dominate the market official said.
“I can say almost 99 percent are tourist arrivals,” Weerathunga said.
“Few may have come for businesses and other purposes also.”
He said that tour operators and hotel industry should actively take part in the promotions and campaigns in order to attract more tourists to the island.
“There was a time where we didn’t get any financial support to promote tourism in Russia but now we have that and we lack industry participation,” Weerathunga said.
“I’m sorry to say that it was really hard to get the information since the industrialists and hoteliers were not very supportive,”
“We hope this will change in the future.” Weerathunga said.
He said the embassy will continue to do promotions, road shows, exhibitions, cultural shows and media tours to grab more Russian tourists in to the Indian Ocean Island.
